Brazil, the largest country of South America, is located in the eastern part of the continent, facing the Atlantic Ocean and bordering all South American countries but Chile and Ecuador. Our capital city is Brasília, a modern city designed and built in the 1960´s, when President Juscelino Kubitschek decided to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a place situated in the central part of Brazil (the central-west region).

Florianópolis is the capital of the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina and it is commonly called FLORIPA. The city is located on Santa Catarina Island, with only a small part on the mainland. Two bridges link the island to the continent but at the present moment Hercílio Luz Bridge, a landmark of the city, is closed for repairs. It is planned to open in the future for pedestrians and cyclists.

Over the years Floripa has become one of the most popular destinations in Brazil, for those who are looking for superb beaches, beautiful scenery, interesting culture and friendly people. It has also experienced a real estate boom with Brazilians, especially from the states of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, looking for a better quality of life away from the chaos of the big cities. It currently has an estimated population of 400,000 people.

The northern beach resorts Jurerê, Daniela, Canasvieiras, Brava and Ingleses get very busy during the summer and there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and other conveniences for the tourist. Eastern beaches, like Joaquina, Mole and Moçambique are among the best surfing beaches and popular with young people. Beaches heading south include Campeche, Armação and Morro das Pedras, which are all very beautiful and also good for surfing. Isolated and unspoiled beaches, like Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragados can be found at the southern end of the island and can only be reached by trail. The Lagoa da Conceição lagoon is a famous natural attraction, and the centerpiece of the island - sports, cuisine and entertainment are first class! The lagoon is relatively shallow, with high winds making it a world-class location for windsurfing.

By taxi:

Taxis are plentiful and may be the preferred transportation. At the airport you will find cabs right ahead the arrival area. If you are planning to go around by taxi, it is advisable to ask assistance of hotel/restaurant staff to call a cab for you.

In September, daily temperatures are expected to have taken form with the maximum temperatures throughout the month being 22oC (72oF). The minimum temperatures for the nights are expected to be an invariable 15oC (59oF). On the same note, sea temperatures are expected to be as low as 19oC. While the maximum UV index for the month is very high at level 8, hours of sunshine are invariably decreased to 4 hours of daily sunshine throughout the month. It is also notable that there is no discomfort in the month as heat is low and humidity favorable.

On average, September is one of the months that experience the most rainfall in Florianopolis with at least 19 days in the month spread for severe precipitations as light rains and moderate rains. The moth is mostly cloudy with wind motion ranging on the average of 1m/s and 6m/s (light air and a moderate breeze).

The International Direct Dial (IDD) code for Brazil is 55 and the city code for Florianópolis is 48. Cell phone coverage in the city is good. Check with your provider, as you may be able to use your own phone with the international roaming services while in Florianópolis. However, be aware of roaming fees, as they may be very expensive. It might be cheaper to purchase a prepaid SIM card once you are in the city to use it in your own cell phone. To buy a prepaid SIM look for one of the many telecommunication kiosks throughout the city.
Internet services are offered throughout the city. Some hotels may offer free Internet access with Wi-Fi computers in the lobbies. There will be wi-fi availability in the IMDRF meeting area.
